Video footage of a car that hit and seriously injured a 13-year-old girl and then fled the scene has been released by Victoria Police.

The teenager remained in hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday evening, after the cyclist was hit by a grey BMW and left for dead when she tried crossing the road at Bell and Sussex streets in Coburg on Sunday night.

The girl's family is keeping a bedside vigil at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Police have released CCTV footage of the car after making a public appeal for information.

It shows the car passing a household driveway and was presumably captured on a camera fitted to the outside of a suburban residence.

The car is described as a dark grey BMW E87 1 Series and may have damage to the passenger side, front windscreen, front bumper, external mirror and headlights.
