Census debacle IBM's fault, PM says

The prime minister says the census bungle was the fault of IBM, but foreshadowed some consequences at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Malcolm Turnbull has put the blame for the census debacle squarely on IBM, but says there will still be consequences for the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The IT giant this week accepted full responsibility for its role in the bungle that forced a 40-hour shutdown of the website.

But the company's managing director told a Senate committee that no one had been sacked or seriously disciplined over the stuff-up.

The prime minister in August suggested heads should roll once a review by his cyber security adviser Alistair MacGibbon was completed.

That report has now been submitted, however Mr Turnbull - speaking for the first time since the inquiry hearing - said he did not want to forecast any personnel changes.

"But obviously there are consequences for this," he told 3AW's Neil Mitchell on Friday.

"All of the accountability within the ABS is subject to further investigation."

It was very clear it was the fault of IBM, who failed to deliver on their contractual commitments to protect the website from the kind of denial-of-service attacks it suffered, Mr Turnbull said.

"There are a number of other failures but fundamentally, that's the reason for the problem."
