Some 40 bodies have been recovered in the Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in just one day, following clashes there, the International Committee of the Red Cross says.
"Around 40 bodies have been recovered for the moment, and first aid has been given to around 60 people wounded," ICRC spokesman David Pierre Marquet told AFP in Geneva on Thursday.
The bodies had been recovered since Wednesday in Bangui by the Central African branch of the Red Cross, he said. He said another 60 or so bodies were recovered last Monday.
Marquet said the ICRC did not yet have a complete death toll for the Central African Republic since a spasm of violence was unleashed December 5.
"We'll know more tomorrow (Friday) because there is currently a curfew and nobody is able to go out, not even emergency personnel," he said.
Amnesty International has said at least 1000 people died in two days of bloodshed from December 5. There have been no reliable figures for the number of dead since.
