English Championship side Leigh have strengthened their Super League promotion bid with the short-term signing of Australian back Brendan Elliot after his release by the NRL's Gold Coast Titans.

The 24-year-old Brisbane-born Elliot, who has also played Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights, will link up with the second division Centurions team in time for their campaign in the top flight qualifiers.

Leigh, relegated from top flight at the end of 2017, are currently outside the top four in the Betfred Championship but have three matches left to secure a place in the qualifiers and owner Derek Beaumont says the club will announce another overseas signing before the end of the week.

"It is a very difficult period at the club as it really is up in the air as to where we will finish but I have to make decisions on the basis that we will make the top four to put us in a good place to mount a challenge to return to Super League," Beaumont said.

"There will also be a further announcement of another overseas player this week which will complete our recruitment for the season and I believe with everyone fit and free from suspensions, we will have the quality to be serious contenders in the qualifiers should we make them."

Meanwhile, Leigh have agreed with Rochdale to bring forward Sunday's league game at the Crown Oil Arena by 24 hours to avoid a clash with the World Cup final.
