Melbourne Storm centre Will Chambers has made changes to temper his play after an ugly 2018 which saw him suspended three times.

Chambers and Storm coach Craig Bellamy met through the off-season to nut out areas the veteran could improve, with discipline well up the list.

The 30-year-old is in doubt for their NRL season-opener against Brisbane at Melbourne's AAMI Park on Thursday night as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury suffered in the All Stars game.

But if he plays he's expected to keep out of trouble.

The last of Chambers' three 2018 bans was a three-game suspension for a crusher tackle that kept him out until their preliminary final.

"We don't want him sitting on the sidelines as often as he has been," Bellamy said on Wednesday.

"It was mutual thinking - we're both on the same page and there's a couple of things I thought he could help himself with and a couple of things he worked out himself."

Despite injury interrupting his pre-season, Bellamy said he'd seen signs Chambers was making changes.

"He probably didn't play the footy he wanted to play last year and I know he's really keen to play well this season," Bellamy said.

"Im pretty excited about what he's going to bring to the team this year."

Bellamy said Chambers needed to get through their final training session, with his likely replacement Marion Seve, who has yet to make his first grade debut despite being on the books of Wests Tigers and Brisbane.
