They were the Aussie country music scene's golden couple until their split in 2013, so when Kasey Chambers joined her ex Shane Nicholson on stage at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, there was a collective gasp from the audience.
The two, who were married for eight years, made a lot of music together so they will stay etched into Australian country music history, including 2008's number one platinum album, Rattlin' Bones.
And so, when Chambers took to the stage during Nicholson's solo gig at The Pub during the NSW festival, it was Rattlin' Bones the pair chose to sing.
"That's actually the first time that we've sung together since we split up, not for any reason other than the opportunity just hasn't been there," Nicholson told AAP in Tamworth.
"We tour separately now and we don't really cross paths with shows anymore so it worked out that last night she had a night off."
The pair have two children together - Arlo, 8 and Poet, 4 - and Nicholson is keen for them to see that their parents can still play music together.
"We've got our kids up here in Tamworth so it was a good chance for her to come up and sing, and for Arlo to see that," he said.
"He hasn't seen his mum and dad sing together for a long time but it was such a big part of his life. He was just a baby when we did Rattlin' Bones and I still remember him falling asleep in my guitar case during soundcheck.
"He kind of grew up around us singing together.
"I think last night he was pretty chuffed to see it again."
Both Nicholson and Chambers are fixtures at the ten-day music festival and have their own successful solo careers.
Last year, Chambers took home two Golden Guitar awards for album of the year and single of the year for her post break-up record, Bittersweet.
This year it's Nicholson's turn with seven nominations for Hell Breaks Loose - his break-up album.
* The Golden Guitar Awards take place on Saturday at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre.
