A leading business group wants the Turnbull government to change tack on industrial relations, warning against another "wasted year" in the run-up to the next election.

The Australian Industry Group argues having a fresh face as prime minister and a new employment minister provides an opportunity to renegotiate legislation with the Senate crossbench.

"It is crucial the government does not take the easy way out in an election year and rule out all the significant changes that would benefit employers," Ai Group chief Innes Willox will say in a speech on Tuesday.
