Changes reaping rewards at Magpies netball

Incoming Collingwood Super Netball coach Rob Wright not only changed his player but their training facilities and offices which appears to be working.

After taking over as Collingwood's Super Netball head coach the first thing Rob Wright did was a clean out - and not just in personnel.

Wright, who coached the NSW Swifts to two grand finals, replaced Kristy Keppich-Birrell ahead of this season and one of his first jobs was to roll up the sleeves and start shifting furniture.

All that remained was a photograph of the 2016 foundation team, to acknowledge their history.

After only managing three wins and a draw to finish seventh on the ladder in a disappointing campaign last year, Wright said it was time for some changes.

"We had five new players and with me being head coach here for the first time I thought, 'Let's start everything again'," Wright told AAP.

"We wanted to build from the ground up."

Ash Brazill, who joined the Magpies at the start of the 2017 season, said the changes had given the club a whole new vibe.

"Last year we lost by 32 in the last game and everything came crashing down and you could feel we were on a downward spiral but Rob came in and changed everything," said Brazill, who also plays for the Magpies in the AFLW.

"The coaching staff completely changed, strength and conditioning, we changed all the rooms around, created a players' lounge - it feels like we're in a new place now.

"Who knows what we're going to do this year but win or lose I think we're going to stay in a much more positive head space."

One of Wright's other surprise moves was to recruit Kelsey Browne from the Sunshine Coast Lightning, which meant he had four Australian midcourters on his books, with room for only three starters.

The signing proved fortuitous with Browne's older sister Madi this week ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

The Magpies opened the season with a 14-point win over last year's champions Lightning.

They have a round two match-up on Saturday afternoon against the Queensland Firebirds at the new Queensland State Netball Centre.

In Sunday games, West Coast Fever host Lightning, the Swifts are at home to the Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Melbourne Vixens and Giants meet in at Melbourne Arena.
