Charges may be upgraded after baby's death

WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson says charges may be upgraded against a man accused of assaulting a baby who died one year later.

Charges may be upgraded against a man accused of assaulting a baby who died almost one year later, but it will depend on details, such as a pathology report, the West Australian police commissioner says.

Nathaniel Lawrence was allegedly assaulted in October last year at Narrogin when he was six weeks old and spent time in hospital.

A 25-year-old Mandurah man, who knew the boy, was charged in March with aggravated grievous bodily harm.

But on September 30, police attended the one-year-old's death at a Golden Bay home.

Police Commissioner Chris Dawson described Nathaniel's death as tragic and very sad.

"We are investigating. If there is sufficient evidence for us to lay further charges that will happen," he told 6PR radio on Thursday.

Mr Dawson said police would consider the pathology report, including Nathaniel's cause of death.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Nathaniel's 21-year-old mother Erica-Leigh Lawrence pay for his funeral.
