Roston Chase helped restore some West Indies pride following last week's abysmal showing as the tourists reached at 7-295 at stumps on day one of the second Test against India.
The Windies lost by an innings and 272 runs in Rajkot but Chase was a calming presence in his 98 not out, steadying proceedings after a top-order wobble in Hyderabad.
Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets as the tourists slipped to 5-113, having chosen to bat first with memories of being bowled out for 181 and 196 in Rajkot still fresh.
Chase and Shane Dowrich (30) ensured there would be no collapse while a 104-run stand between the former and captain Jason Holder edged them closer towards a respectable total.
Holder, back in the line-up after missing the first Test with an ankle injury, passed his half-century but was strangled down the leg side for 52 off Umesh Yadav shortly before the close.
Chase saw out the final few minutes, alongside Devendra Bishoo, and will resume on Saturday needing just two more runs for a fourth Test century - and first outside the Caribbean.
