Chemicals find in Qld house closes streets

Police have cordoned off streets in the North Queensland town of Ayr following the discovery of unknown chemicals during a search of a house.

Police have declared an emergency situation and set up an exclusion zone in the North Queensland town of Ayr.

Officers were executing a search warrant around 2.45pm on Thursday at an address in Brisbane Street when they located a quantity of unknown chemicals.

The area bordered by Adelaide Street, Norham Road, Michael Street and Edward Street has been cordoned off and specialist officers are attending.

A police spokesperson couldn't confirm what the chemicals were, but said the officers must have seen something that gave them cause for concern.

"Most average officers aren't chemical experts, so they call in our specialist teams who are trained to deal with these situations," he said.
