Dr Alan Finkel's term as Australia's chief scientist has been extended for a further two years to the end of 2020.

Science Minister Karen Andrews said Dr Finkel, who took on the role in January 2016, continued to be a tireless advocate and highly respected champion for science, innovation and technology in Australian public life.

Most recently he was involved in major reviews of energy policy and science teaching in schools, as well as Innovation and Science Australia's 2030 strategic plan.
