Child with measles on flight to Brisbane

A child with measles has arrived in Brisbane on a flight from Manila, sparking a public health warning.

Passengers on a flight from the Philippines to Brisbane this week have been urged to check their immunisation status after a child onboard was found to have measles.

The child was infectious on flight PRO221 from Manila to Brisbane International Airport on July 8, Queensland Health said in a statement on Thursday.

He was also at the emergency department of Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital two days later, between 2pm and 9.30pm.

Authorities have warned people on the flight to be alert to symptoms, which include fever, coughing, runny nose, rashes and sore eyes.

"If people are adequately vaccinated with two recorded doses of Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine, they are very unlikely to get the disease," public health physician Bhakti Vasant said.

"People who are unsure or have concerns about their immunity to measles should contact their doctor to check whether they have had both vaccines."

Symptoms usually start around a week after infection but it could take longer, Dr Vasant said.

The disease is spread by droplets through coughing and sneezing.

Dr Vasant urged Australians travelling overseas to get vaccinated prior to leaving.

It is the second recent case of measles in Brisbane, with an infected child visiting a number of locations in May, including Brisbane International Airport after arriving from Delhi.

The child also visited Springwood Shopping Mall and Logan Hospital.
