Childcare workers are calling for a 30 per cent pay rise following the government's backing of a $7000-a-year wage increase for community sector workers.
The United Voice union revealed on Tuesday that it was seeking a $10 an hour pay rise for all 67,000 workers, The Australian reported on Wednesday.
"We've been talking to the (federal) government about the need to lift wages because childcare educators and directors earn less than $20 an hour," United Voice assistant national secretary Sue Lines told the paper.
She said the federal government needs to fund the pay rise as parents are already paying high fees for childcare and can't afford to foot the bill.
