Two young children are believed to have witnessed a violent suburban fight in which a Hobart man was repeatedly stabbed and later died in hospital.

The 39-year-old from Goodwood died on Monday morning and a 46-year-old Moonah man is in custody being questioned by police, with charges expected to be laid later in the day.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel told reporters the victim went to a house at Lutana where he was confronted and a fight broke out.

"There were children at the house and they will certainly be the focal point of our attention, they will be provided with support, but we will also look to them as possible witnesses of what occurred in that fight outside," he said.

"They are quite young, but they are of such an age that they are able to assist police."

A medical examination found the victim suffered multiple stab wounds, the punctures consistent with those caused by a sharp-edged knife.

He spoke briefly with police before leaving the scene in an ambulance and died after reaching hospital.

Insp Joel said the victim had breached a family violence order by attending the residence, which is home to a 36-year-old woman, also named in the order.

The two men involved in the fight, which at times spilled onto the street, were known to each other.

Forensic teams are sifting through multiple items that could have been used as weapons.

The 46-year-old man has also been treated for injuries to his hands.
