Chinese students at the University of Melbourne are being targeted in a crime wave that's prompted Victoria Police to meet with Chinese consulate officials and increase campus patrols.

A police spokeswoman said several arrests have been made over a number of late-night thefts near the university during the past few months.

No-one has been physically injured but officers are consulting with university staff and students about the issue.
