Chris Brown wants to use his troubled domestic violence past to raise awareness of spousal abuse during his scheduled tour of Australia.

Brown has been given notice that his visa may be refused on character grounds and he has 28 days to explain why he should get one.

He was convicted in 2009 for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown has now made his case on Twitter, insisting he would raise awareness about domestic violence while in Australia, and his message would be more effective on youngsters than public service announcements (PSAs) and parental advice.

He writes, "I would be more than grateful to come to Australia to raise awareness about domestic violence. I'm not the pink elephant in the room anymore... My life mistakes should be a wake up call for everyone. Showing the world that mistakes don't define you. Trying to prevent spousal abuse... The youth don't listen to parents nor do they listen to PSAs. The power that we have as Entertainers can change lives."

Brown's visa is still under consideration. The tour is due to begin in December.
