Chris Hemsworth might not get an Oscar nomination next week, but he'll get to announce a few.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday that the former Home and Away star-turned Hollywood action hero will help reveal the Oscar nominations next Thursday.
He will stand on stage with Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs inside the organisation's Beverly Hills headquarters at the early hour of 5.38am (12.38am Friday AEDT).
The nominations are revealed at that time so they are carried live on the big audience morning shows on the US east coast, which is three hours ahead of Los Angeles.
Each year the Academy invites an actor to help with the ceremony.
Hemsworth, who has starred as Thor in three films, was an early tip for an Oscar nomination for his role as 1970s playboy British Formula One ace James Hunt in the Ron Howard biopic, Rush.
However, midway through Hollywood awards season he has largely received a cold shoulder from critics' groups and other award organisations, including the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes.
Cate Blanchett, best actress for Blue Jasmine, and Catherine Martin, for costumes on The Great Gatsby, are Australia's best chances of Oscar nominations.
The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will be held at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on March 2.
