Christchurch has been rattled by another moderate earthquake just days before the anniversary of the 2011 disaster.

The magnitude 4.3 aftershock struck just 10 kilometres east of the city at a depth of 20km at 7.15pm on Thursday.

Geonet said nearly 1000 people reported feeling the light shaking, largely centred in Christchurch but with some reports coming in from further than Timaru and the lower North Island.

The Fire Service said there had been no reports of damage.

The city was struck by a 5.7 magnitude quake on Sunday, which has prompted more than a thousand claims to the Earthquake Commission.
