Residents of Christchurch have had a shaky night, with several aftershocks rocking the South Island city that was devastated by a deadly quake earlier this month.
A magnitude 4.5 quake struck 10km east of Christchurch, at a depth of 10km, just after 8pm (NZT), GNS Science said on Friday.
The quake would have been felt strongly in Christchurch, and felt throughout Canterbury.

It was preceded by a quake measuring 3.2 at 7.25pm, and followed by another of 3.2 magnitude at 9.24pm.
At 11.23pm an aftershock measuring 3 struck, followed by another of 3.3 magnitude at 2.04am.
Anyone who slept through those was probably jolted awake by a 4.1 quake at 4am. It was within 5km of Lyttelton and at a depth of 11km.
Christchurch has been hit by swarms of aftershocks following the devastating 6.3 magnitude quake on February 22.
