Nationals MP George Christensen has weighed in on speculation around potential replacements for George Brandis, amid reports cabinet ministers are discussing the attorney-general's successor.

Mr Christensen said there would be a "Melbourne Cup field" of Queensland Liberal-National Party contenders.

"My hope, and I hope it's not putting the moxy on it, but somebody with the capability of (former LNP senator) Joanna Lindgren, a very capable woman, a woman who is of Aboriginal descent, is able to come back into this parliament," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

"Should there be a Senate vacancy arise she would be the perfect person to come back.

"But look, that vacancy hasn't arisen. George Brandis is here until he wants to not be here any longer, and he's doing a very good job as attorney-general."

Senator Brandis drew unwanted attention this week after being caught appraising his own Queensland LNP as "very, very mediocre" in front of a microphone he assumed was off.

He also described Queensland LNP Leader Tim Nicholls as "not very good" and flagged concern about the looming threat from One Nation at the next state poll, due by early 2018.

Mr Christensen wants to see more Queenslanders in federal cabinet when a reshuffle takes place.

"When the last reshuffle happened I certainly said there was an undersupply of Queenslanders and we've got a lot of good talent," he said.
