The last survivors of the Christmas Island boat tragedy, which claimed the lives of 30 asylum seekers, have been released into the community.

The last of the 41 asylum seekers, who either swam ashore or were rescued after their boat foundered on rocks on December 15, were transferred to a community house in western Sydney, refugee advocate Jamal Daoud said in a release on Saturday morning.

The transfer comes amid riots by detainees at the Christmas Island detention centre which have seen accommodation tents burnt down and authorities resort to using tear gas on protesters.
