Two Iranian asylum seekers have reportedly remained on the roof of a building at Christmas Island detention centre for more than 24 hours.
The two asylum seekers are said to have climbed on to the roof on Friday afternoon and have so far defied attempts to talk them down, according to Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.
Mr Rintoul says tensions have been rising inside the detention centre as all compounds were locked down after the protest began.
"Christmas Island is the Guantanamo of Australia's onshore detention regime," Mr Rintoul said.
"For years the government has said Christmas Island was going to close; they have said it again this year. Now would be a good time to make good on the promise."
A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs on Saturday morning said it was aware of an incident at the detention centre and was monitoring the situation.
