Citizenship saga costs taxpayers $11.6m

Taxpayers have had to spend $11.6 million on legal fees for the citizenship constitution court battles, the mid-year budget shows.

The dual-citizenship saga affecting federal MPs has cost Australian taxpayers more than $11 million in legal costs.

The mid-year budget papers, released in Canberra on Monday, show the cost of the constitutional matters came in at $11.6 million.

Nine MPs and senators have faced the High Court, with two more Labor members referred for hearings in the new year.
