Claims still active after Vic prison riot

The state government is still dealing with 16 active insurance claims nearly two years on from the biggest prison riot in Victoria's history.

Nearly two years on from Victoria's largest prison riot there are still 16 active WorkCover claims for affected staff.

Inaccurate rumours about a smoking ban and anger that the canteen had run out of tobacco early triggered the two-day riot at the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Ravenhall on June 30, 2015.

It was the largest in the state's history, causing up to $12 million in damage.

The state government is now being prosecuted by WorkSafe, accused of failing to provide a safe workplace.

At a budget estimates hearing for corrective services on Wednesday it was revealed there are still 16 active employee insurance claims stemming from the riot.

Legal costs for the WorkSafe court case were not revealed because the matter is ongoing.

The court case will go to a two-day committal hearing in Melbourne Magistrates' Court in November.
