Classroom roll call of one million in Vic

The school holidays are over and nearly one million Victorian kids are enrolled as the 2019 teaching year gets under way.

Nearly one million children are heading to Victorian classrooms this week, with nine new schools open for the first time.

In 2019, some 992,400 students will go to school in Victoria, with 554,200 in primary, 420,500 at secondary and others undertaking special education.

More than 634,000 will attend a government school up from 620,400 last year.

Education Minister James Merlino wished students and teachers the best ahead of the new school year.

"We're building a world-class education system so that every student can make the most of school and get the best start in life," he said in a statement on Monday.

One hundred new schools are due to open across Victoria over the next eight years, with builders already appointed to start construction on 11 schools scheduled to accept students from 2020.

More than 1300 schools will also receive upgrades.

There are 1541 government schools across the state, including 1127 primary schools, 82 primary-secondary schools, 247 secondary schools, 81 special schools and four English language schools.

Disadvantaged students at 1000 public schools are set to receive free breakfasts and lunches after an election promise by Premier Daniel Andrews to expand the scheme.

Tuesday is the first official day of the school year, with some students starting back on Wednesday.
