Well-meaning cleaners have thrown away an art installation at an Italian museum after they mistook it for rubbish.
The installation 'Where are we going to dance tonight?' (Dove andiamo a ballare questa sera?), by artists Goldschmied & Chiari, featured 300 empty champagne bottles, streamers, confetti, and cigarette butts and was installed at the Museion Bozen-Bolzano.
The cleaners completely removed the installation, which is part of a wider exhibition, on Saturday night.
The artwork represented the scene at the end of the party and was a critical look at Italy's age of plenty in the 1980s.
In a statement the Museion's director said the artwork had been reinstalled and would be reopened to the public.
"We greatly regret what happened to the artists’ work: it was the result of a misunderstanding with the staff of the cleaning company," Letizia Ragaglia said.
"In agreement with Goldschmied & Chiari, we immediately got to work reinstalling the piece.
"It has to be said that this is not the first time this kind of thing has happened in the contemporary art world, yet it has sparked great debate in the media and on social media, including on an international level.
"It all goes to show how contemporary art is capable of arousing great interest, or even annoying people. We believe it is essential to keep this dialogue open."
