Clearer ATAR system promised by 2019

The federal government has announced its plan for clearer information about university admissions, which it expects to be fully rolled out by 2019.

Students are being promised a clearer and easier way to find out what scores they need to get into Australian university courses within the next few years.

A report into admissions systems published late last year found universities were not being transparent about the real cut-off Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) scores.

It made more than a dozen recommendations, which Education Minister Simon Birmingham announced on Wednesday will be fully implemented by 2019.

They include changing the way the ATAR and other academic requirements are presented, and easier-to-understand information about the different pathways into higher education for school leavers, mature age students and others.

"Students need to be given clear and accurate advice, but too often the information on offer has been complex, confusing and inconsistent," Senator Birmingham said in a statement.

"Some institutions already meet the benchmarks laid out in our plan but this will ensure all prospective students can get the necessary information and support to succeed at their studies and complete their qualification."

The federal government is hoping to launch a new national admissions information platform by August 2018, that will give prospective students the ability to compare policies, courses and admission criteria across different institutions.
