Cliff Richard has addressed long-standing speculation about his sexuality, insisting that his romantic preference is of no consequence.

People have questioned the unmarried British singer's sexuality for decades, but Richard has repeatedly declined to confirm or deny whether he is gay.

Asked on Channel Nine's A Current Affair whether the rumours bother him, Richard insisted that while he once struggled with the gossip, he no longer cares.

"It hurt my family a lot of course," he said.

"It doesn't really matter to me any more. I have got gay friends. If I was gay would it make any difference?

"Would you not come to my concerts if I was gay? I hope not."
