George Clooney's mum has given her soon to be daughter-in-law the thumbs up.
Nina Clooney says British lawyer Amal Alamuddin is a "lovely girl".
The movie star is yet to confirm the shock engagement news, which broke over the weekend, but partners at Alamuddin's London law firm have congratulated the couple - and the 36-year-old has been spotted wearing what appears to be a huge ring on her wedding finger.
Now Clooney's mum, Nina, has spoken out about the latest reports, saying, "You can say I'm extremely happy. Amal's a lovely girl."
"I like her very much," she told the Mail Online.
The actor's mum also reportedly told the publication, "We weren't at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn't be happier for them. On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him.
"Amal's world couldn't be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle ... She is brilliant, she is a very bright woman and at the very top of her career.
"They also share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people."
Nina Clooney reveals she first met the lawyer, who represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange when he was fighting extradition to Sweden over allegations of sexual assault, a year ago.
Clooney has been married before - his union with actress Talia Balsam ended after four years in 1993.
Alamuddin, who was once voted London's hottest barrister in an online blog, is the daughter of prominent Lebanese couple Ramzi and Baria Alamuddin. Her mother was once considered one of the nation's most beautiful women.
She studied at Oxford University in England, where she became an expert in international and criminal law and human rights.
