The "linchpin" of a serious assault case against Kings Cross figure Mark Judge is the clothes he and his co-accused were allegedly wearing, a court has heard.

But a key witness to the attack, which left four men unconscious on the ground, had trouble recalling details on Wednesday.

Judge and Nathan Waring, both 33, told Downing Centre Local Court they were not present when the altercation took place near Kings Cross police station in July last year.

Crown prosecutor Marianne Carey said CCTV cameras recorded people entering and leaving the area but did not record the attack.

"The linchpin is the distinctive clothing that the accused were wearing," Ms Carey told the court.

Waring was allegedly involved in an altercation with a group of people outside the BackRoom nightclub in the early hours of July 21 and suffered a cut to his lip.

After the fight, CCTV cameras at the Kings Cross police station allegedly captured the group walking past and then captured the accused and a third, unknown male.

When they allegedly confronted the four victims, Judge was heard saying "not in front of the police station", prosecutor Marianne Carey told the court.

The victims tried to defuse the situation but Judge allegedly punched one to the head causing him to fall heavily to the ground where he suffered a deep gash to his forehead.

He then punched another victim to the head who fell to the ground.

Waring or the unknown assailant punched a third victim who also went down and then struck him again.

"As he began to sit up the person that punched him also kicked him to the head," Miss Carey said.

The fourth victim came to the aid of one of his friends who was struck to the head by the third assailant and fell into a brick wall.

Karla Attwells, who was with the victims, said in her statement one of the men had a cut lip but she couldn't recall that in her evidence on Wednesday.

Ms Carey said Waring was wearing a light shirt and a beret and Judge was wearing very bright high-top sneakers and a baseball cap.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to five charges including reckless wounding in company, affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The hearing continues on Thursday.
