Widnes coach Denis Betts branded his team "disgraceful" and "atrocious" after their 40-0 Super League defeat to Huddersfield.
The Vikings were formally condemned to the qualifiers after conceding seven tries without reply to a Giants side that took a major step towards Super League safety.
"It was disgraceful to be honest," Betts said. "I was embarrassed by the team's effort and skill.
"We had chances in the first couple of sets and dropped the ball and bombed 18 points. We then ran out of energy on the back of our lack of completion. We gave them about 28 extra tackles."
Widnes will need to sharpen their act as they prepare for the seven-round play-offs, although they will at least have the services of Rangi Chase, who signed a new two-year contract earlier in the day but missed the game at the John Smith's Stadium due to suspension.
England winger Jermaine McGillvary scored two of Huddersfield's seven tries as they easily completed their first double of the season.
They still need one more win from their last two matches to guarantee a top-eight finish and, although he was not totally happy with the performance, coach Rick Stone was delighted with the scoreline.
Elsewhere, Mark Percival's man-of-the-match performance and stunning late try sealed a well-deserved 19-12 victory for St Helens over Hull.
The England centre was in sensational form as he bagged a 14-point haul to send Lee Radford's side home empty-handed.
Warrington registered their biggest win of a disappointing campaign, with winger Tom Lineham claiming four tries in their 50-10 thrashing of Leigh at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The win kept alive their faint hopes of a top-eight finish, but they will need to win their final two games at Wigan and at home to Widnes and hope other results go their way to avoid having to fight for their Super League lives in the Middle 8s.
