Coach insists Hockeyroos must show more

The Hockeyroos coach says Australia will have to improve on their performance if they are to beat world No.3 Argentina in a World Cup quarter-final.

The Hockeyroos' coach says his side will need to step up when they face off against Argentina if they want a shot at the World Cup semi-finals.

Australia's women's hockey team will meet the world's third-ranked Argentinian side in the quarter-finals in London on Wednesday, after a 1-1 draw with New Zealand saw them into the last eight.

The Hockeyroos finished on top of their pool with one win and two draws but coach Paul Gaudoin says his side will need to improve on that performance if they want to continue their run.

"We've got to be better than that if we're going to go deep into this tournament," he said.

"We've got to be smarter in those late stages."

Australia, ranked No.5 in the world and Argentina last met in a 2016 Rio Olympics showdown, with the Hockeyroos snaring a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Emily Smith in the 33rd minute.

The side will be without midfielder Kalindi Commerford in Wednesday's match after the 23-year-old tore her hamstring in the game against New Zealand.

The Hockeyroos play Argentina at 5.15am Thursday (AEST).
