Coalition backbenchers have farmer concern

A group of coalition backbenchers have spoken up in the party room urging the government to help white South African farmers they say are being attacked.

Seven coalition backbenchers have urged the party to consider the plight of white South African farmers they say are being targeted for attacks.

The MPs raised their concerns about the "unique" issue in the coalition party room meeting on Tuesday, but stopped short of calling for a special visa to be issued.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told the MPs people do not need to be "refugees" in order to qualify for Australia's humanitarian program.

The MPs told the party room they were concerned their worries about white farmers in South Africa had been misconstrued as "racist" in media reports.

They also asked if there were any diplomatic actions Australia could take.

Ms Bishop said Australia's high commissioner in South Africa had been urging the government to plan for land reforms.

Mr Dutton last week said he was going to stare down criticism from "crazy lefties" over the plan to bring farmers to Australia.

"They don't realise how completely dead they are to me," Mr Dutton told 2GB radio.

Ms Bishop later pointed out there was a humanitarian visa class that people can apply for.

"We have expressed our concerns to the South African government about the proposed land reforms that could lead to two greater tensions in South Africa," Ms Bishop told ABC TV.

"We have expressed our concern at the high murder rate in South Africa."
