Coalition backs Holden's plans

The federal opposition has backed a move by Holden to wait until after the federal election before deciding on its long-term future.

The federal opposition has backed Holden's approach to wait until after the federal election to determine the future of its manufacturing operations in Australia.

The company has been negotiating with both the opposition and the government over ongoing assistance but has stalled making a final decision until after the September 7 poll.

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey said Holden boss Mike Devereux had acted "quite wisely" in taking that approach.

He said if the coalition took office he would sit down with the car maker to discuss the challenges facing the Australian motor vehicle industry.

"We are not going to make rash promises now," Mr Hockey told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.

"We're not in the business of giving guarantees with taxpayers' money until we have all of the information in front of us."

However Mr Hockey said the coalition was committed to scrapping the fringe benefits tax changes proposed by the federal government which he said were having an impact on consumer demand across the car sector.

He said that would result in increased sales and was the biggest "leg-up" the auto industry was going to get during the election campaign.
