Cochlear to start Chinese production

Hearing solutions company Cochlear says it will begin manufacturing in China in four years, to produce implants for the nation and others.

Hearing implant maker Cochlear is spending $50 million on a manufacturing facility in China.

The Australian company says the facility in Chengdu will produce implants for China and other emerging markets.

The facility should be up and running within four years, and increase production of cochlear implants by about 50 per cent.

Chief executive Chris Smith on Thursday said the move is aimed at building global capacity to support growth.

"This investment should allow us to further extend our market position and deepen our commitment to China," he said in a statement to the ASX.

Mr Smith said China is one of Cochlear's fastest growing markets, and has significant potential.

Cochlear is based in Sydney, on the Macquarie University campus, and has a manufacturing facility there, along with others in Lane Cove and Brisbane.
