A major road was partially closed and delivery of newspapers was held up after heavy snow fell in the NSW Central Tablelands overnight.

Commuters were issued with a travel warning on Thursday morning after the Department of Transport closed eastbound lanes of the Great Western Highway between Lithgow and Bathurst to light vehicles because of heavy snow and fog.

Snow also fell overnight in Orange.

"There were cars in my neighbourhood that had snow on the windscreen," Christine Rapley, a local newsagent from Orange told AAP.

She said the temperature hit the minuses overnight, with the snow affecting the delivery of newspapers.

The Great Western Highway has since been fully reopened.

Yesterday, parts of Victoria's southwest and East Gippsland regions shivered through their coldest start to May on record.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Rod Dickson said it's been a very cold start to May in terms of averages over the state, and every station in those regions has been below average.

In Victoria's Alpine region, snow has already fallen at Mt Hotham, Mt Buller. Fifteen centimetres fell at Falls Creek yesterday, where temperatures fell as low as minus 4C.

The snow season officially kicks off on June 11.
