Coles, Woolies under pressure to drop Zoo mag

There's a campaign afoot to force two of Australia's major retailers to pull men's magazine Zoo Weekly from their shelves.

Zoo Weekly is considered an 'unrestricted' magazine

More than 5,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Coles and Woolworths to remove the Zoo Weekly men's publication from its stores.

Laura Pintur from activist group Collective Shout launched the change.org petition, saying the retailers sell Zoo as a "family friendly" product.

Collective Shout targets corporations and media which they say objectify women to sell products.

"There's tips to coerce women into having sex using alcohol. They use photos of young girls lifted from teen porn sites. Promotions for best shot of your girlfriend's breasts," Ms Pintur says.

"I didn't realise just the harm this magazine could be doing until recently. I'd paid no attention," she writes.

"But when I heard Zoo was regularly promoting rape culture and sexism with phrases like, 'you want to pick the loosest/skankiest one of the lot and fetch her a drink, separate her from the flock', I couldn't stand by and watch it promoted to kids at supermarkets."

Ms Pintur is urging people to call Coles and  to request the magazine is dropped.

Coles and Woolworths declined SBS's requests for comment.

Comment has been sought from Zoo Weekly.
