Australian designer Collette Dinnigan says designing budget clothing for little girls for Aldi allows her to create good pieces that are affordable.

Australian fashion trailblazer Collette Dinnigan, who commanded the catwalks of Paris for years from the mid-90s, has now turned her focus to a low-cost children's range for budget German supermarket chain Aldi.

Dinnigan bowed out of high fashion in 2013 to spend more time with her two young children.

She has since designed a high street range for Target and eyewear for Specsavers, and is now working to launch a 74-piece collection for little girls for Aldi, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

The pieces in the Young Hearts collection will be priced from $11.99 to $29.95 - a far cry from her previous luxury bridal and evening pieces, which could sell for $5,000.

Dinnigan said "growing up in Australia and children with a gypsy bohemian spirit" were the inspiration behind her Young Hearts collection, which will be available at every Aldi store around Australia.

Despite Aldi's discount reputation, Dinnigan assured the quality of the garments was "very good".

"I've always been a very keen advocate of good design and making it affordable for most people," she said.
