AFL club Collingwood has been fined more than $20,000 for falsely advertising a membership offer.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the league's biggest club advertised a membership offer which appeared to include three games and a Collingwood jumper for $20 (with an asterix), when the actual total price was $120 payable over six months.

The ad, which was published in the Herald Sun newspaper and emailed to more than 90,000 people in May, referred to a payment plan in fine print, but did not display the total price.

Under Australian Consumer Law, ads that state part of the price must also prominently state the total price payable.

"Advertisements that do not state the real price of goods or services have the potential to draw in consumers based on half-truths," ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.
