A man who was thought to have been in a vegetative state for more than a decade, has for the first time been able to communicate with scientists in a pioneering procedure using a brain scanner.

Scott Routley, who suffered a serious head injury in a car accident, has responded to questions asked by scientists, with his mind.

The breakthrough has been described by doctors as 'astonishing.'
