Comanche wins Sydney to Hobart line honours

It's the first time since 1998 that a US boat has won the race.

American supermaxi Comanche has taken line honours in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The Jim Clark-owned 100-footer crossed the finish line at Hobart's Constitution Dock on Monday in an unofficial time of two days, eight hours and 58 minutes.

It is the first time since 1998 that a US boat has won the race.

Last year on race debut Comanche came second to defending champion Wild Oats XI which in 2015 retired on day one with sail damage.

But it has also been far from smooth sailing for Clark's boat.

On Saturday they hit something in the water and suffered a damaged rudder and dagger board which caused early steering problems.

It prompted the boat to turn back to Sydney, surrendering the lead to fellow-US yacht Rambler.

The crew then made some repairs and decided to push on.

After a 13-hour chase, Comanche overtook Rambler and she held the lead all the way to Hobart.

Rambler remains on track to finish second.
