Following the devastating death last October of Kunmanara Raymond, a promising young indigenous footballer, the Pitjantjatjara community of Amata, South Australia began to paint, using art to grieve and celebrate the traditional culture that inspired the twenty-year-old.

What began as a grieving process turned into a powerful collective voice for the community.

The community's elders and their grandsons held a special painting camp on sacred ground to put their stories down on canvas.

"When we did this painting ... we did it with young people, and I taught these people about my work and my story and culture so when I'm gone they can tell it," said community elder and artist Hector Tjupuru Burton.

The strongest paintings were sold to one anonymous collector for a significant sum on condition a public institution would later acquire them.

The proceeds will all return to the community to provide food and jobs, and an annual football trophy in honour of Kunmanara Raymond.
