Concern over loss of migrant job program

A migrant community group in Tasmania fears loss of a migrant job program could lead to a rise in problem gambling and alcohol abuse.

A migrant community group in Tasmania fears loss of a migrant employment program could lead to a rise in problem gambling and alcohol abuse.

The federal government has axed the Migrant Communities Employment Fund - put in place by the previous Labor government to fight migrant and refugee unemployment.

The Department of Employment says the $6.6 million allocated to the program is being redirected to fund other Coalition policy priorities.

John Brown is the chief executive of the Migrant Resource Centre in Northern Tasmania.

He told Biwa Kwan the funding cuts could have disastrous consequences for migrant groups in his state.
