As mediators try to end the violence in South Sudan, a South Sudanese community group in Australia is calling on the federal government to do all it can to end the weeks of fighting.

Violence erupted in mid-December between troops loyal to the country's President Salva Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, and his former deputy Riek Machar, a Nuer who was sacked in July.

The fighting has claimed at least 1000 lives and displaced more than 120,000 people.

Emmanuel Kondok from the Sydney-based Southern Hope Community Organisation says Australia can help end the violence through its work with the United Nations.

Mr Kondok told Darren Mara he holds grave concerns for family and friends in South Sudan.
