The Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia has raised concerns about dowry in Australia, saying it's a hidden problem in some migrant communities.

Dowry involves the payment in assets or in cash by the bride's family to the bridegroom's family in order for a marriage to take place.

In some cases, excessive demands are placed on families, resulting in abuse of the bride if her family is unable to pay.

The Chair of FECCA's Women's Advisory Committee Pallavi Sinha is lobbying for the practice to be banned across Australia and spoke to Peggy Giakoumelos.
