Concerns have been raised about the role of the PM's new Indigenous Advisory Council.

A Newcastle-based community organisation has written an open letter to the Abbott government's Indigenous Advisory Council expressing concerns over the body's role.

The Indigenous Advisory Council was handpicked by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to advise him on Indigenous policy and chaired by Warren Mundine.

In it, the group calls into question the council's terms of reference, and its transparency.

Don MacAskill is the chief executive of the Awabakal Aboriginal Co-operative and spoke to NITV's Natalie Ahmat about some of the concerns raised in the letter.
