Condolence books for Nelson Mandela have been opened across NSW for people to pen their respects.

Premier Barry O'Farrell says the books will be available for signing until December 19 and will be presented to the South African government.

"We all mourn the passing of South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela - a true global hero and one of history's most inspirational figures," Mr O'Farrell said in a statement on Sunday.

The books will be available at the Sydney Opera House, NSW Parliament House and the offices of state MPs.

There will also be an online condolence book.
