Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has ordered Confederate flags to be taken down from the grounds of the state Capitol.

It's the latest move to ban the divisive banner from state capitals, store shelves, licence plates and monuments across the South.

The order was issued on Wednesday, one week after Dylann Storm Roof allegedly opened fire at a historic black church in South Carolina, killing nine churchgoers in what police have labelled a hate crime.
