Conference to look at submarine jobs

A conference in Adelaide will look at ways of maximising jobs for local workers on Australia's new submarine construction program.

The federal government has again promised local workers will be used to build the navy's next generation of submarines in Adelaide.

"I re-emphasise, every submarine in the future submarine program will be built in Australia by Australians," Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said on Tuesday.

"Nationwide industry involvement will be essential to the successful delivery of this major program."

The move comes after workers feared missing out on the construction of the 12 submarines along with the wider $35 billion future frigates program to begin construction at Osbourne in Adelaide by 2020.

"Australian industry will play a role in completing the design of the submarine construction yard, and in building the yard from late 2018," Mr Pyne told the fourth Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference in Adelaide.

"We expect to sustain an average of 2800 jobs as we construct the future submarine fleet."

Mr Pyne said the flow-on impact for young job seekers in South Australia would also be significant.

"Many young Australians who are currently finishing high school will be the apprentices laying foundations for where these large submarines will be built," Mr Pyne said.

"Engineering, technical roles, program management, commercial roles, procurement and other opportunities will provide career paths for young Australians."

Independent modelling released last month predicted shipbuilding in the state would create around 8000 jobs.

Construction of French-designed submarines is expected to begin in Adelaide in 2022.
